Clayton woman dies in single-vehicle crash

Posted

SMYRNA — A 47-year-old Clayton woman died in a single-vehicle collision Sunday.

According to the Delaware State Police, at approximately 9:19 p.m., a Honda Accord was traveling east on Wheatleys Pond Road, in the area of Sunnyside Road, at an apparent high rate of speed. The Accord failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the road into a ditch, troopers said.

The car continued through the ditch and rolled over, ejecting the driver and ultimately coming to rest in a field.

Police said the driver was not wearing her seat belt. She was transported to an area hospital, where she later died. Her name is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The road was closed for approximately three hours.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asks witnesses to contact Master Cpl. J. Lane at 302-698-8457, to send a message via the state police Facebook page or to call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
