City of Cambridge, CWDI announce mediation agreement

Posted

CAMBRIDGE - The Mayor of Cambridge and Board President of Cambridge Waterfront Development Inc. announced late Wednesday, May 22 an agreement to enter mediation presided over by a retired judge.

Mayor Stephen Rideout released a statement cancelling a meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 23, intended to introduce proposed amendments to CWDI’s Articles of Incorporation for the purpose of providing transparency and accountability.

At the time he proposed the amendments last month, Rideout wrote, “I invited public comments, including from the Board of Directors of CWDI. Earlier today, the City entered into an agreement with CWDI to mediate, before a retired judge, the City’s ongoing concerns with the operations of CWDI.”

“This is a voluntary process that will involve discussions with CWDI and other stakeholders. As a result, tomorrow’s scheduled meeting will be postponed depending upon the outcome of the mediation,” the statement continued.

“Additionally, the City and CWDI will seek to stay the pending litigation in the Circuit Court for Dorchester County pending the outcome of the mediation. The City’s goal remains the same. We week a transparent and accountable process toward reaching the ultimate goal, the successful development of the Cambridge waterfront. We approach this mediation with that goal, and the hope that the mediation will be successful,” the statement concluded.

As the CWDI Board’s scheduled May 22 meeting opened to the public following closed session, President Angie Hengst read the following statement:

“CWDI received an update on the status of the City’s lawsuit against CDWI and Yacht Maintenance. CWDI remains committed to negotiating with the City to resolve our differences quickly in service to the community’s 30-year vision for the waterfront that includes the expansion of Yacht Maintenance and a boutique hotel.”

“CWDI is optimistic that it can reach an agreement with the City that will allow both deals to move forward. We look forward to the upcoming mediation with the City and our other partners,” the statement concluded.
