Special to The Dorchester Banner/Cambridge Main Street Cambridge South-Dorchester Key Club member Bassey Arikpo installs a banner on a downtown light pole Nov. 22, helping Cambridge Main Street in its effort to decorate downtown prior to the holidays.

CAMBRIDGE – Cambridge Main Street and the Cambridge-South Dorchester High Key Club have collaborated to create an opportunity for the high school volunteer group to work on projects downtown. Most recently, the Key Club developed an entertaining promotion for this weekend’s Small Business Saturday festivities downtown.

The promotion features 12 elves in downtown shop windows, each with one word on them. The game requires downtown shoppers to first locate all of the elves and then arrange the words into a sentence. Everyone who is able to correctly assemble the sentence will be placed in a drawing for a Cambridge Main Street Gift Certificate worth $25.

“With the Cambridge Christmas Tree lighting ceremony Saturday evening, we are urging people to come into town early to enjoy some great sales and promotions,” said Cambridge Main Street Executive Director Brandon Hesson. “Because people may bring their children into town with them, we felt it was important to have something fun happening underneath all of the awesome specials. It’s something fun that everyone can enjoy.”

The Key Club helped install holiday wreaths and banners on downtown street lights last weekend. Key Club is an international stedent-led organization providing members service opportunities in their communities.

Mr. Hesson believes there are going to be many opportunities for the high school students in the future, and they will not be limited to providing manpower for existing programs.

“When I was only a few years older than some of those students, some friends and I had a great opportunity to do some interesting things in our community,” said Mr. Hesson. “None of that would have happened without some open-minded guidance and the chance to work through some crazy ideas. Those experiences shaped me as a person, helped shape my community, and hopefully Cambridge Main Street can extend the same opportunity to the C-SD Key Club.”
