C-SD dominates Washington, 54-6

SNOW HILL – The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School varsity Vikings played their final regular-season home game on Friday, beating Washington (Somerset County), 54-6. Much of the game was played in pouring rain, with a running clock in the second half and the Vikings’ backups taking over from the starters.

C-SD is ranked second in the Bayside 1A, behind Colonel Richardson’s 4-0 division record. Though the Vikings have a better overall record of 6-2, while Colonel is 4-4, the Caroline men have a better record in the division, by virtue of a 14-13 win over the Vikings earlier this season. The rankings are rounded out by Kent County, Snow Hill, and Washington.

The Washington High School Jaguars had scored only 22 points in their six previous games, while allowing 234. The Vikings’ points scored/allowed were 229/96, so it looked like a sure win for the home team coming into the contest.

That’s pretty much how it went, as in the first quarter, the Vikes pulled ahead 21-0 behind touchdowns by Majestic Jones, Sterling Perkins and a nice throw from quarterback Blake LaBelle to Anthony Hughes in the closing seconds of the period.

The second quarter guaranteed a running clock in the second half, as the Vikings went up by more than 35 points after scoring runs by Jaden Ferguson, Kayion Marine – this one in pouring rain with Marine laughing as he crossed the goal line - and a catch by sophomore Semaj Pinder to make it 42-0.

Through all the scoring, and with a slippery ball to boot, kicker Wil Reinbold proved his reliability, missing only one extra point in the game.

In the third quarter, William Jackson added to the tally, making it 48-0 after a failed 2-point try.

Sophomore Ra’Quan Cornish was next on the scoreboard, the last touchdown of the game for the Vikings.

With four minutes left to play, the Jaguars recovered a Vikings fumble. A C-SD penalty on the play gave the visitors the ball deep in Vikings’ territory.

The men from Somerset are having a rough year, still looking for their first win. At an away game, soaking wet and cold, the Jags played with pride, to the final minutes. Quarterback Jkwon Smith gave the Jaguars a chance to cheer, carrying the ball into the end zone to avoid a shutout.

NOTES:

  • The Vikings (1A) came into the game on a three-game winning streak, after the previous week’s 52-6 victory at Snow Hill.
