Brengle suffers grueling loss at Wimbledon

Madison Brengle lost an extraordinarily close three-set match to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round of the women’s singles at at Wimbledon this morning.

All three sets went to a tiebreaker before Alexandrova prevailed 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-7) in a match that lasted two hours and 49 minutes.

Brengle, the 33-year-old from Dover, was trying to reach the third round at the Grand Slam tennis tournament for the third time in her career. Brngle is ranked No. 114 in the world while Alexandrova is No. 22.

In the back-and-forth final set, Brengle held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 before Alexandrova rallied each time. Trailing 6-5, the 28-year-old Russian won the final two points of the set to force a final tiebreaker.

In the tiebreaker, Brengle never led after dropping the first three points. Down 7-2, Brengle won four of the next five points to close within 8-6.

But Alexandrova took two of the next three points to win the match and advance.

Both players won 131 points in the match.

Alexandrova hit 49 winners to only 13 for Brengle but she also committed 91 unforced errors. Brengle had 42 unforced errors.

Brengle now an all-time record of 7-8 in singles play at Wimbledon.
