GEORGETOWN — Brandon L. Haas, indicted in connection with the alleged abuse and eventual death of his stepdaughter, was jailed at Sussex Correctional Institution early Sunday.
He had been out on bail since Oct. 9 after posting an $8,000 cash bond at that time, according to court records.
The state issued a breach of release request on April 30 and the Delaware Vinelink online prisoner database lists him in custody at 1:57 a.m. Sunday.
A court docket shows a $50,000 cash-only bond for breach of release and an arraignment scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. Superior Court Commissioner Andrea Freud will oversee the matter.
Former Smyrna residents Mr. Haas, 39, and his wife Kristie L. Haas, 28, were indicted in April after investigation into the death of Emma Grace Cole, whose remains were found near a Smyrna-Clayton Little Lass Softball field in September, 2019.
Ms. Haas was the mother of the child who the Delaware Department of Justice said died at age 3.
Charges against both Mr. and Ms. Haas included first-degree child abuse, hindering prosecution and endangering the welfare of a child (six counts each), the DOJ announced following the indictment.
Ms. Haas was additionally charged with abuse of a corpse, reckless burning and second-degree assault. Prosecution of a tampering with evidence charge was discontinued.
According to the DOJ, Mr. Haas could face 45 years in prison if convicted on all charges, and Ms. Haas could receive a maximum sentence of 55 years.
The couple was arrested in Pennsylvania on Oct. 2, 2020, according to the DOJ.
Ms. Haas remains in custody at Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution. A modified cash bail of $100,000 was set on April 29, when Ms. Haas entered a not-guilty plea.
