DOVER — Bayhealth, in partnership with the Food Bank of Delaware, held a successful drive aimed at addressing food insecurity.
The initiative, titled “Hunger Doesn’t Stop After the Holidays,” received support from residents, businesses and organizations throughout the state.
From Jan. 15-28, Bayhealth collected over 1,300 pounds of nonperishable food items at its Kent and Sussex campuses, as well as at Bayhealth at the Blue Hen Corporate Center in Dover. The donations were then delivered to the Food Bank of Delaware via the Mobile Care unit.
In addition, throughout the year, the health system partners with the food bank on the 302 Food Rescue Crew app, which connects volunteers with fresh nutritious foods from grocery stores, caterers, restaurants and others to deliver to organizations that serve food-insecure individuals.
Bayhealth also provides free boxes of food to patients with food insecurity. They include shelf-stable, low-sodium, low-sugar items and are intended to feed recipients for the week or so between discharge and signing up for long-term assistance.
