CAMBRIDGE – On Monday, at approximately 10:23 p.m., Cambridge Police Department (CPD) officers responded to an address in the 200 block of East Applebee Avenue in reference to a disturbance call. Upon arrival, Officers contacted a female victim who reported that a physical altercation had occurred at a residence in the 800 block of Race Street involving a 31-year-old Cambridge man.

The victim reported to officers that the suspect became angry with her, grabbing her by the shoulder and shirt and taking her cellphone, damaging it. She also said the suspect started to damage other property belonging to the victim and instructed her to leave the house.

Prior to leaving the house, the victim said the man had grabbed a long gun (shotgun or rifle) and pointed it at her, telling her to pull the trigger. She also said the man placed the same firearm under his chin, threatening to kill himself.

Officers then responded to the residence in the 800 block of Race Street in an attempt locate and apprehend the suspect. They found that the man’s vehicle was still in the driveway and that all of the doors were secured.

Officers attempted multiple times to contact the man with negative results, a statement from the CPD said.

Due to the severity of the crime that was reported, officers set up a perimeter of the residence and still attempted to contact the man with an intercom system, without success. Additional CPD units were called in to assist, including detectives and a negotiator.

The CPD negotiator, however, was not able to convince the man to come out and surrender. Allied Agency SWAT Teams from the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) / Easton Police Department (EPD), Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff (QACSO) and the Maryland Natural Resources Police Department (NRP) also responded to assist with the situation.

CPD detectives obtained a search and seizure warrant for the residence, and a felony warrant for the suspect’s arrest.

After the arrival of the Allied Agencies, negotiators from both CPD and the TCSO/EPD SWAT Team continued to attempt contact the man with negative results. Attempts included loud announcements over an intercom system and placing a direct-line telephone into the residence. These attempts continued for a period of time, until a SWAT Team robot was placed inside of the residence in an attempt to locate the man. The camera in the system revealed him in the second-story portion of the stairwell.

He was then ordered to exit the residence and he did comply, being taken into custody at approximately 6:12 a.m. The suspect was then transported to CPD for processing and his initial appearance.

Inside the home, a loaded .30-30 rifle was recovered. The suspect was later turned over to the Dorchester County Department of Corrections on no bond. Andrew Scott Malinowski was charged with:

• Assault 1st Degree
• Assault 2nd Degree
• Firearm Use/Felony Violent Crime
