Barnes and Maxwell: As open space diminishes, Sussex residents are frustrated

Posted

What does development mean to us? Eleven years ago, it meant an opportunity to move from New Jersey into a lovely home, near good friends. They were neighbors who, two years earlier, had escaped our high taxes.

Living in Millsboro meant more open spaces, with farms and woods, which we didn’t know before. It made life more enjoyable, as we experienced the joy of seeing deer wandering, a fox roam at the edge of the woods and young children fishing at a nearby lake. Our lives had slowed down, and it gave us the pleasure of being one with nature.

Now that we’re living in a place that is not as green and where everyday life brings news of developers versus those who want to protect the environment, we’re frustrated and very sad. We feel like we’re being sucked back into the crowded, unfeeling atmosphere we escaped 11 years ago. Is there anything we can do, except pull up stakes and move farther away? As a result, we’re asking for help in getting our voices added to those asking for more reasonable development in southern Sussex County.
