Automatic voter registration starts Wednesday at Delaware DMV sites

Posted

The implementation of automatic voter registration is beginning at Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles locations, the Department of Elections announced Tuesday.

Beginning Wednesday, every person who completes an in-person or online application or renewal of his or her driver’s license, learner’s permit or identification card, or completes an in-person or online application to change his or her name or address on these documents, will be automatically registered to vote in Delaware.

Individuals not already registered to vote, who are of sufficient age and whose citizenship status is confirmed by the division will be registered.

These voters are given no party affiliation and will receive a “notice of automatic voter registration” from the department. Voters can use that form to choose a party affiliation or cancel their voter registration.

Voters may pick their political party through the day of the first primary election to vote in it. Since Delaware is a closed-primary state, only registered Democrats or Republicans can take part in their party’s primaries.

Voters should contact the Department of Elections, not DMV, with questions about the automatic process. Information is available at elections.delaware.gov or by calling 302-739-4277.
