SMYRNA — Smyrna High’s Elijah Williams was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.
The senior won the Division I state title in both the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump in the DIAA state meet last weekend. Williams also finished second in the 300 hurdles and third in the long jump.
On Wednesday at the Meet of Champions, Williams followed up that performance by winning the boys’ high jump (6-8) and the 110 hurdles by setting the state record in a time of 13.8 seconds.
“He’s really quick,” Smyrna coach Tyson Tanner said about Williams. “He’s done some things in the hurdles that I’ve seen people do but at a higher level. He’s able to play with someone while running and still run sub-15.
“You can see him. He just turns it on and gets faster immediately. ... It’s exciting to see someone who has that great deal of talent and that passion that he does.”
The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
