Posted

Smyrna High sophomore field hockey player Dru Moffett has been voted this week’s Delaware State News Athlete of the Week after tallying four goals in a 5-2 Henlopen North win over Dover last week. In five games this season, she has collected six goals and five assists for the 4-1 Eagles.

A second-team All-Henlopen North pick as a freshman, Moffett has been selected to attend the USA Field Hockey Rise Selection Camp in January. The camp is a tryout for the Junior National Team.

With over a 4.0 GPA, Moffett hopes to play field hockey in college. She was also a starter on the Smyrna girls’ soccer squad that reached the DIAA Division I state finals last spring.

“She has quick hands and stick skills and advanced vision on the field,” said Eagles coach Loveita Moffett.

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Friday.
