RESPONSES TO QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Are Delawareans ready for a major hurricane?

Posted

Delaware has been spared from significant weather during the hurricane season so far, but many of us are watching what is happening in the South. What would worry you most if a hurricane was heading our way? Do you think Delawareans are prepared? What areas of the state are most vulnerable?

  • We seldom see any major events. Pics of property, list of meds and copies of important documents are a must! — Howard Gaines III
  • No, Delawareans are not prepared for anything because of some governor who decided it was a good idea to do what he does and decided what we are allowed to do based on what other states are doing and not what is actually happening here, like the epic failure that was the “pandemic.” It was, “Well, New York City has not lifted its mandates, so we won’t either.” NYC also has literally nine times the amount of people as this entire state. Then, it was, “China has run out of toilet paper,” so people ran to the store to get as much as they could, leaving the shelves empty. And now, it was happening again. This state is a complete joke regarding the preparedness it needs to survive any disaster, no matter how big or small. — Kyle Hendrix
  • I, myself, and hubby, if they called for an evacuation, we would go somewhere. We are in our 70s. But we have excellent insurance — home and flood and all storms. So, we would take our pets and head for higher ground. It’s only stuff. We have the most important papers and valuable items in our waterproof safe. We could and would rebuild. — Denise Bella
  • Most of Delaware is at or below sea level, so I’m amazed there is not more severe flooding regularly. — Nabeela Jeanne Black Swartz
  • I don’t think the general public is, but our emergency response teams and equipment are. — Richard Benson
  • I’m 37, been in Delaware all my life and can only recall being hit with one hurricane that was worth mentioning, and that was Floyd. And it really wasn’t even that bad. — Christopher Joyce
  • I am more concerned about tornadoes that are spun off by the hurricanes. Flooding scares me, as we are in a low part of our subdivision. We are in Harrington. — Leslie Vinnedge Cournoyer
  • The wind worries me. — Chuck Holliday
  • I’m in Middletown, and historically, we don’t get hurricanes in Delaware, maybe tail end of a Category 1 or a tropical storm. Sussex County beach property is a different story. — Joe Turk Sr.
  • Truthfully, no, Delaware is not ready. We haven’t experienced this kind of stuff before. It would devastate us. — Kevin Roe
  • Nope, except for those who have put up emergency supplies, not for hurricanes but for an apocalypse. — Kathleen Robertson
  • Scary to think about. — Car Monaco
