BBN--METS-BRAVES ATLANTA — DJ Stewart, Rafael Ortega and Francisco Lindor homered as the New York Mets won for the seventh time in nine games, beating the first-place Braves 10-4 despite two homers by Atlanta’s Marcell Ozuna. Going ahead to stay with a four-run fifth inning, the Mets bounced back from an embarrassing series at Citi Field just over a week ago. Atlanta won the first three games of that meeting by a combined score of 34-3 before the Mets salvaged the finale 7-6. BBA--MARINERS-WHITE SOX CHICAGO — Cal Raleigh homered twice and drove in six runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 14-2 for their seventh straight victory. Playing without Julio Rodríguez, who was rested amid a torrid stretch at the plate, Seattle used a fast start to improve to 32-13 since July 1. Luis Castillo pitched seven innings of one-run ball in his third consecutive win. Raleigh upped his total to 24 homers on the year. It was his fifth multihomer game of the season and No. 7 for his career. The lowly White Sox finished with eight hits in their seventh loss in nine games. By Jay Cohen. SENT: 665 words, photos.

BBO--RANGERS-DIAMONDBACKS PHOENIX — Tommy Pham lined a two-run double in the 11th inning after Ketel Marte hit a tying homer in the ninth, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers. The Rangers led 1-0 going into the ninth inning after Adolis Garcia hit his 31at homer and Jordan Montgomery scattered four hits over eight sterling innings. Nathaniel Lowe put Texas up 3-1 with a two-run single in the 11th inning, but the Rangers could not hold it. Geraldo Perdomo hit a run-scoring double and, after Marte was held at third, Pham dropped a two-run double in right-center to extend the Rangers’ losing streak to a season-high five games. FBC-T25--MICHIGAN-HARBAUGH-NCAA Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will serve a three-game suspension to start this season as part of self-imposed penalties for NCAA recruiting infractions. The school’s move means Harbaugh will not be on the sideline for the second-ranked Wolverines’ home games against East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green. He will be permitted to coach the team during the week, as per NCAA rules. The infractions case is tied to improper contact with recruits. By Ralph D. Russo. SENT: 630 words, photos.

ATH—WORLDS-HURDLES BUDAPEST, Hungary — Grant Holloway started fast and never looked back in winning his third straight 110-meter hurdles crown at the world championships. His back-to-back-to-back titles put him in elite company. Holloway joins Greg Foster as the only 110 hurdlers to win three world titles in a row. Holloway’s time of 12.96 seconds edged out Olympic gold medalist Hansle Parchment of Jamaica by .11 seconds. Holloway’s U.S. teammate, Daniel Roberts, finished with the bronze. Posing for the cameras, Holloway counted out his world titles, raising one finger, then another, then another. By Pat Graham. SENT: 555 words, photos.

It’ll be centered in Manila. That’s where the medal rounds will be held in early September. That’s also where the favored U.S. team will play all its games in the event. Fans have been waiting for years for this chance at seeing some of the game’s biggest names competing in their city. The home nation has declared Friday a national holiday of sorts, closing schools and some businesses to mark the occasion of the tournament opening. By Tim Reynolds. SOC--WWCUP-SPAIN CELEBRATES MADRID — Spain celebrated its Women’s World Cup title at home with Olga Carmona remembering her late father and being thrown up into the air by her teammates in front of thousands of fans who welcomed the newly crowned champions. Carmona participated in the celebrations despite being told after the match that her father had died following an illness. Her family decided to wait until the match was over to inform Carmona. She scored the winning goal in Sunday’s final against England. By Tales Azzoni. SENT: 635 words, photos.

BBY--LITTLE LEAGUE SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Offense is taking a step back at the Little League World Series this year. Pitchers are zipping through opposing lineups, helped by a new rule meant to boost participation that calls for everyone on the roster to be in the batting order. But that’s not the only reason. Some of these guys just throw hard. After the LLWS hit its 20-game mark on Sunday, the tournament’s combined run total stood at 140, significantly fewer than the 187 runs scored through that point last year – the only other time the tournament field has been 20 teams.
