BKO--ON BASKETBALL-US GETS READY

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — The sightseeing, beach trips and golf outings are over now. For USA Basketball, it's time to lock in on the World Cup. The U.S. men's team was flying to Manila on Monday and will spend the next few days going through final practice preparations before their opening game on Saturday against New Zealand. The Americans will be favored to win the tournament, but understand that it's not going to be easy to come home with the gold. By Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds. SENT: 820 words, photos.

FBC-T25--MICHIGAN-HARBAUGH-NCAA

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has informed his team and staff that he will serve a three-game suspension to start this season as part of the school’s self-imposed penalties for NCAA infractions, two people familiar with the situation tell the AP. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the school was notifying the NCAA of its intentions and preparing an official announcement. By College Football Writer Ralph D. Russo. SENT: 280 words, photos.

FBC--BIG TEN PREVIEW

The Big Ten’s final season with a 14-team, two-division setup should play out the way it has most years since the conference expanded in 2014: An East team will win the championship, and it probably will be Michigan or Ohio State. By College Football Writer Eric Olson. SENT: 720 words, photos. With FBN--T25-Ohio St-Quarterback (sent).

BBO--THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL

PHOENIX — The Seattle Mariners were mostly sellers at the trade deadline three weeks ago, dealing closer Paul Sewald to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a move signaling that this season probably wouldn’t end in the playoffs. Julio Rodríguez had other ideas. The young All-Star recently finished a four-day stretch for the ages, setting an MLB record with 17 hits in those four games and almost single-handedly willing the Mariners back into the American League playoff race. By David Brandt. SENT: 660 words, photos.

CAR--NASCAR-PLAYOFF WATCH

Bubba Wallace will be in a precarious position at Daytona International Speedway this weekend, and it has nothing to do with three-wide racing at 200 mph. Wallace holds the 16th and final spot for NASCAR’s Cup Series playoffs. It’s a tenuous grip at best. By Mark Long. SENT: 660 words, photos.

BKL--REBUILDING SPARKS

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Sparks knew this season was going to be a rebuilding year for a franchise looking to regain its championship pedigree. BBY--LITTLE LEAGUE

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Pitchers are bringing the heat at the Little League World Series, routinely topping 70 mph from about 46 feet away – which will look to the batter like it's major league fast. That may help explain why runs are down at the tournament, a drop of more than 40 total runs in the first 20 games. Two teams that throw hard and have given up a total of three hits, Taiwan and Japan, face each other Monday. UPCOMING: 550 words, photos. Developing from 5 p.m. start.
