CAMBRIDGE—This year’s Taste of Cambridge, or just “The Taste,” as it’s known in town, was a huge success once again. Saturday’s weather started off looking downright horrible, but by noon the skies were clearing and the staff and volunteers from Cambridge Main Street were busy setting up on a sunshine-filled afternoon. The schedule said The Taste was due to start at 5:00 p.m., but the joint was jumping at 4:00. The afternoon good weather brought out unprecedented crowds of Tasters and just the curious, and everyone was primed for the first crab dish to be offered. Once again, Cambridge Main Street sold out of every Taste ticket available. Ten local restaurants offered 12 different crab dishes for the Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice awards, and prizes were awarded for the Judges’ Choice as soon as the judging staff had thoroughly sampled each of the offerings. The five judges are profiled in the sidebar on page 8, and their decisions are as follows (Peoples’ Choice awards will follow when they become available): CRAB CAKE/CRAB BALL: Water’s Edge Grill (Hyatt), who also took Best in Show honors, qualifying the restaurant to compete in the World Food Championships later this year. MARYLAND VEGETABLE CRAB SOUP: Katie Mae’s Country Shoppe CREAM OF CRAB SOUP: Jimmie & Sooks CRAB DIP: Portside Seafood Restaurant CRAB SPECIALTY: Blue Point Provision Company (Hyatt) for Chesapeake Crab Sushi. Bands played, kids swarmed while Cascading Carlos juggled fire in the Kids’ Area, judges judged and tasters tasted, while everyone cruised Race and Poplar Streets and visited with the vendors and neighbors. It was a grand, good afternoon and evening, and one that shouldn’t have been missed.
