If you’re a Somerset County landowner with a drainage ditch, stream, creek or river flowing through the property or live adjacent to such a waterway then you may be eligible for free trees through the Maryland Department of Resources’ Backyard Buffer program.
The program is targeted for smaller landowners who are not eligible for agricultural cost-share programs. Packets are reserved in March for pickup 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 15 from the University of Maryland Extension Office at 30730 Park Drive, Princess Anne.
Each Backyard Buffer bundle will include 25 bare root seedlings — five each of American Plum, Elderberry, Flowering Dogwood, Spicebush, and Swamp White Oak. They will be approximately 1 to 2 feet in height.
Reservations are first-come, first-served and not available in all counties. If you’re a Somerset County property owner contact Luke Marcek at 410-651-2004 or email lucas.marcek@maryland.gov. To get on the reservation list visit 2023 Backyard Buffer Sign-Up.
