Posted

WESTOVER — The Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester County Health Departments invite you to join them as they Go Red for the month of February.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), nearly 45% of women ages 20 and over are living with some form of cardiovascular disease. Since 2004, the AHA’s signature women’s initiative. Go Red for Women, has addressed the awareness and clinical care gaps of women’s greatest health threat, cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Throughout February, each county has weekly heart-healthy events planned and social media information scheduled.

  • Week 1 kicks off with Go Red Day on Feb. 2, where you are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness and share your photos on social media. Later in the week, on February 9th, a heart-healthy cooking demo will be featured on Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester County Facebook pages.
  • Week 2, we encourage you to get active!
    • Somerset County has scheduled a Go Red walk for Feb. 17.
    • Wicomico County presents a Ladies Night Out on Feb. 16.
    • Worcester County will have a walk/scavenger hunt on Feb. 17 and 18.
  • Week 3, keep an eye on each county’s social media for tobacco/vape quit tips, resources, facts, and more.
    • According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is a major cause of CVD and causes approximately one of every four deaths from CVD.
  • Week 4 is all about being stress-free. Look out for stress management and mindfulness tips on social media.

Follow social media channels (@somersethealthmd, @wicomicohealth, and @worcesterhealth on Facebook and Instagram) for event dates, times, and location, plus tips and resources about cardiovascular health.
