Bill Cain comes on the scene in Crabbers basketball
By The series on Crisfield High School basketball successes continues with this third installment.
CHS won a third State title in 1964 but fell in the District final in ’65 even though they had a 20-2 record. The Crabbers endured 3 straight losing seasons from 1966 to 1968 when Jack Morgan retired.
Bill Cain took over in 1969 with CHS finishing 9-9. In 1970 Crisfield consolidated with Woodson and Marion as the federal government mandated that all states integrate their schools.
Woodson players Willis White who led CHS with 17.9 points per game, Lonny Brown, Harrison Lake along with future Crabbers coach Larry Miles joined with Tim Tawes, Kenny Rice, Jay Tawes, and Mike Byrd.
The Crabbers defeated Worcester, the only Black school left to advance to College Park, the first time first since 1964. Worcester featured future UMES star and NBA player Talvin Skinner. CHS lost to Mount Savage in the State semis.
In 1973 it was Cain’s first title. He would go on to win 7 Regionals, 5 Bayside and 4 State crowns. More next week.
