Delaware Correctional Officer charged with official misconduct
DOVER — A 31-year-old Dover man was arrested April 23 for several felony charges stemming from a misconduct by a correctional officer investigation, Delaware State Police said on Wednesday.
Jahee White was arrested after a joint investigation that included the Delaware State Police, Delaware Department of Correction, Delaware Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, authorities said.
Police said that investigation began March 2024 stemming from allegations that a correctional officer, identified as Mr. White, was allegedly conducting unethical behavior by using his position as a correctional officer to engage in criminal conduct at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna. Investigation determined that Mr. White was allegedly utilizing his position as a correctional officer to further his drug distribution operations by smuggling illegal contraband into the prison and accepting bribes to do so, police said.
Department of Correction Commissioner Terra Taylor said: “This alleged conduct is deeply troubling.
“We hold our employees to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, and any breach of that trust must be met with swift and appropriate action.
“The joint investigation and arrest underscores our shared dedication to protect the health and wellbeing of incarcerated individuals and correctional staff and to remove the threat of contraband to the safety and security of our correctional facilities.”
Mr. White was taken into custody without incident in the 500 block of Schooner Way, police said. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11, and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $95,000 cash bond.
Mr. White was charged with official misconduct position used to engage in criminal conduct (three counts), possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to deliver a counterfeit controlled substance, receiving a bribe, promoting prison contraband, possessing illegal narcotic or prescription medication with intent to deliver, and second-degree conspiracy.
