CAMBRIDGE – A 19-year-old man is being held in connection with a shooting and escape last summer.

On Aug. 1, at approximately 5:39 p.m., Cambridge Police Department (CPD) officers responded to the Eastern Shore State Hospital Center in the 5200 block of Woods Road in reference to a shooting incident. While officers were enroute, further information was relayed that the suspects may have fled in a black car.

Hospital security officers told police that an unknown subject in a black vehicle approached the building and shot several times into a glass window. The unknown subject then kicked the broken window out, which allowed a patient to escape with the subject in the black vehicle. There were no reported injuries at the scene.

The patient who escaped was identified as Darrin Lee Jeter, 19 years old, of Rockville. Jeter had been committed to the hospital for assault on law enforcement officers.

Jeter was later located in Montgomery County by allied law enforcement agencies.

As a result of the above incident, an extensive joint investigation was conducted by the Cambridge police Department and the Rockville Police department. This investigation resulted in an arrest warrant being issued for Israel Labastida Jr. 19, of Glen Burnie.

A search-and-seizure warrant was issued for a home in Glen Burnie. On Tuesday, the warrants were executed and several items were seized, including a loaded 9 mm handgun.

Labastida was arrested on the Dorchester County District Court arrest warrant, processed, and taken before a District Court Commissioner.

He was ordered to be held on no bond pending trial. Charges are still pending in Rockville for the items seized from the residence. Labastida is currently charged with:

Conspiracy to escape in the first degree

Assault - First degree (7 counts)

Assault - Second degree (7 counts)

Reckless Endangerment (7 counts)

Handgun on person

Loaded handgun on person

Firearm use/Felony -Violent crime

Malicious destruction of property
