The nation is awaiting Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s plan to save the U.S. Postal Service, due at some point this month. Meantime, postal delays in Delaware and policy changes at the agency got a lot of attention this week. Tuesday night, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., made a fiery speech chronicling the importance of on-time deliveries and excoriating what he sees as Mr. DeJoy’s poor performance. “I have no beef with the men and women of our Postal Service, but I have real and deep concerns about how the Postal Service is being run under the current postmaster general,” he said. “In January and February alone, my office received hundreds of messages from constituents complaining about mail issues,” the senator said. “Since last April, I’ve heard from nearly 5,000 Delawareans, folks asking for robust funding for the Postal Service, wanting stronger vote-by-mail initiatives, and hundreds and hundreds of them reporting delays in the mail,” he said.
- Under previous administrations the post office became a bloated, underperforming money pit. They are being forced to modernize and get closer to at least a break-even point, and our politicians don’t like that. — Bob Skuse
- I live in old New Castle, and the mail here is a joke. You won’t get anything for a few days, then you get stacks of mail. I had some important papers that were delivered two weeks late. — Rodger Workman
- I’m certainly not defending the USPS, but I had a check sent to me via FedEx on Feb. 21, and it finally reached me on March 5. It’s conspiracy, people. We need to go back to the pony express. — Mary Grampp Brown
- I had something important from the bank that I needed to mail. I actually sent it by UPS rather than use the post office. I didn’t trust them to get it there. — Sharon Greenfield Cohee
- The pony express? Are you serious right now? Confirm new governors. Oust DeJoy. — Benjamin Black
- It’s not just farmers suffering postal delays. It’s hit or miss if our mail gets delivered. Our mail has been sent back to credit card companies, and they, in turn, ask us to update our address. We’re here! I do not believe it’s our local post office causing this. Their deliveries have always been great. — Sharon Greenfield Cohee
- Laughing and pointing at Trumpers. What did you expect other than a transfer of your money to the private sector? — Tommy Bou
