Speak Up: Seaford’s fetal-remains ordinance put on indefinite hold

Posted

Enforcement of Seaford’s controversial ordinance pertaining to the disposal of fetal remains is on hold indefinitely, pending action by Delaware’s General Assembly. At a special meeting, City Council voted 4-0 to stay enforcement of the ordinance originally approved by a 3-2 margin Dec. 14. The ordinance would require “dignified” disposal of fetal remains — burial or cremation — from abortions performed within city limits. The passage of the ordinance drew strong opposition and threats of litigation.

  • I mean, if people are really upset about this new ordinance, let’s just expand the current precedent then. We should be able to just put humans in medical-waste bags, and then, they go where they go. For a lot of families struggling, this would probably save a lot of money. Thoughts? — Beth Gallagher

Delaware reauthorizes state of emergency

Delaware reentered a state of emergency beginning Monday, Gov. John Carney announced.

Gov. Carney said this will allow the state to mobilize the National Guard to help hospitals and manage the current COVID-19 surge. Approximately 100 members of the Delaware National Guard are being trained to become certified nursing assistants.

  • And still, masks are not required. How stupid. — Patricia Pryke
