Speak Up: Police reform evolving one year after Floyd’s death

Posted

The sessions couldn’t come at a more relevant time. On the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, law enforcement officers were being tutored on considering health concerns while in a physical struggle to gain custody of someone. The weeklong “Response to Resistance Training” event orchestrated by the Dover Police Department was expected to draw 200 or more attendees statewide, Chief Thomas Johnson said. “We didn’t try to (time it) that way, but the symbolism (connected to Mr. Floyd’s death) kind of revealed itself, as we were getting into the planning stages,” he said. The program comes as Delaware officials discuss police reforms spurred by the death of Mr. Floyd while being restrained with a knee to the neck by a police officer in Minneapolis a year ago. The then-officer, Derek Chauvin, was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter April 20. A former paramedic, Chief Johnson said Mr. Floyd’s death sparked the notion to provide training for officers on recognizing signs that someone has gone from a combatant to being in a state of compromised health.

  • Cool. Now, if only criminals could be taught to obey officers’ commands. — Ray Zelano
  • And holding criminals fully accountable, as well as the criminal-loving AGs and judges. Death penalty needs to be brought back in Delaware and all 50 U.S. states.. — Becky West
  • True, criminals should be held accountable to their actions, as well as corrupt cops. For far too long, a sizable percentage of cops have gotten away with killing, beating, framing Blacks, just as in L.A., where the cops lied about the death of a man, reporting that he died in an accident, but someone leaked the video on how he really died at their hands. Those are the cops that, for decades, have gotten away with murder. They, too, should be held accountable, just as the lawbreakers. — Michael Jones
  • When do we begin criminal reform? — Jon Walczak
  • Better reform those out there committing crimes, as well. What a joke. — Willie Preacher
  • The rising murder/crime rates in nearly every major American city, the majority run by Democrats, really show effectiveness. They can’t choke a burglar, but more children are being gunned down in record numbers by people that aren’t police. Democrat priorities. — Kelly Lord
  • Murdered for trying to pass a fake $20. Cops are out of control. — Tommy Bou
