Speak Up: Mask requirements announced for Delaware schools, continued
Posted
Gov. John Carney announced last week that everyone in K-12 schools and child care centers must wear face coverings indoors effective Monday, regardless of vaccination status. The requirement covers both public and private schools in Delaware.
What science and data is this decision based on?— Kelly Kaufmann McKenzie
Children can bring it home to unvaccinated people, and Kent County has a very severe risk rating, due to low rates of vaccination. — Eileen Patricia
I am well-aware that children can get COVID; my children had it with coldlike symptoms. They actually have a greater risk of dying from the flu/pneumonia. You don’t see masks slapped on our kids every flu season. You know they can pick up the flu or any other virus from school, as well? Children have a 50-times greater risk of dying in a car accident than they do of COVID. Do you still put your kids in the car? I do because this is life, and life has always had risks. We have seen that the masks can cause psychological and physiological harm to our kids. You, your kids and everyone you know should be taking vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, drinking lots of water, getting fresh air, sunshine and exercise. That is a thousand times more effective than a mask. Our children deserve a proper education, unmasked and unharmed! — Kelly Kaufmann McKenzie
If kids die so much from the flu, perhaps we should have had them masked up before this. Because no one got the flu last year, even when kids were back in session. And we put kids in five-point harnesses, booster seats, mandate seat belt laws, and yet, kids still die. So why do we do all the buckling up to begin with? — Dale Bert
Maybe we shouldn’t. The car seat literally takes up the entire back window of my car. It’s dangerous. I’ve emailed manufacturers to try to make them different. And I’ve always wondered: For a while, my child couldn’t get out of his car seat (as an older child). If I got into an accident and he needed to get out of the car seat, he couldn’t do it. We would never get those stats, and you are saying we should mask up forever? Yeah, OK, we already people with compromised immune systems. Not sure we should make it worse. There is safety, and then, there is mandated consumerism. — Beth Gallagher
If the flu is as bad as you said, and we had no flu last year in schools because of the masks, then that suggests the masks do work on reducing the transmission of the flu. So why not have kids wear them? It saves lives then, doesn’t it? — Dale Bert
