Speak Up: Delaware House committee approves permit-to-purchase gun bill, continued

Posted

A House committee, after a lengthy and sometimes fiery hearing, approved legislation Tuesday that would require a permit to purchase a handgun. Following the four-hour meeting, the House Judiciary Committee voted on party lines to release the bill to the floor. Around 60 members of the public, plus a few expert witnesses, testified, with a slight majority speaking against the measure. Another three dozen or so individuals signed up to speak but were unable to due to time constraints. Though the bill was released by the committee, it likely will not be voted on by the full House until an amendment addressing some concerns raised Tuesday is drafted and filed.

  • I’m not an anti-gun person, just pointing out that most mass shootings — be it in schools, Las Vegas, wherever — the shooter purchased the gun legally. — Brendan Warner
  • The constituents weren’t heard or respected yet again. — Shyla Lyons
  • What good is it to require law-abiding citizens to jump through another hoop when they just let the people who illegally use guns out of prison before the arresting officer even ends their shift? — Dave Fisher
  • How many dope peddlers and criminals will be making an application for a permit? Remember the names of all those representatives who voted for the passage of this legislation and demonstrate how you feel at the polls — then, they’ll hear you! — Dennis Kirkwood
  • Much of the country is going for constitutional carry, while Delaware goes the infringement route. It’s crap like this from the anti-Constitution left that had me buy all my guns when Obama was president. — Steve Durnan
  • The only people affected by these laws are the law-abiding citizens attempting to conduct a constitutionally protected activity. Shootings will continue in places like Wilmington, as long as everyone continues to ignore the socioeconomic disaster it is. — Frank Vig
  • How many career criminals will sign up for a legal carry? Guns will never be taken off the streets, and the mental health and justice systems need to be taken care of properly. That’s the problem. And put money in schools for safety at the doors. — Dennis Orlando Jr.
  • Republicans are making it harder to vote than to buy guns. It’s no wonder they are the minority party. — Tommy Bou
  • Second amendment rights are a bipartisan issue. Do you believe there aren’t registered Democrats with firearms? Independent voters? Libertarians? — Heather Laskey
