Speak Up: Committee being considered to address concerns at Milford home for vets

Posted

The decision to form a committee to address issues — including staffing and leadership concerns — at the Delaware Veterans Home was recently well-received by at least two elected officials with personal ties there.

  • My husband was a resident there until he passed away on Jan. 8 this year. Since his passing, the whole facility has gone downhill: the Administration has no respect for the staff and is the main reason so many have left the job. Staff members care deeply for the residents, however, when you have the higher ups degrading everything that is done, that brings down the morale. When my husband was there, he received excellent treatment but, quite frankly, I am so glad he is not there to see how things are being run. The veterans do not deserve this type of treatment. I would love to be a part of this committee! — Dottie Gilbert Burke
  • There is a petition about the Delaware Veterans Home at https://www.change.org/p/state-of-delaware-and-dvh-respect-fairness-without-retaliation-in-the-workplace. Comments tell a sad story of how the veterans are not being cared for as well now as they were a few years ago. The issue is staff shortage. The reason cited by manythat the staff is short-handed is due to leadership decisions and a hostile work environment. Many who make comments on the petition say they were once part of a family so we have to assume they would have not left were it not for changes in how the facility was managed. — Gene Thornton

Response to letter asking ‘What’s up with the GOP?’

“One of the questions that nags at me these days is why the GOP seems so ready to give up on democracy.”

  • The writer makes many good points. My own theory is that Republicans have become accustomed to minority rule, where their presidential candidates (GW Bush, Trump) win without the popular vote, the 50 Republican senators represent 25 million fewer Americans than the 50 Democratic/Independent senators, and together, their presidents and senators appoint judges who do not reflect the popular will. I call this democracy-turned-on-its-head. When the minority enjoys so much power, why bother coming up with popular programs. Instead, just gerrymander and voter-suppress your way to a winning ticket. — Judith Butler
