Caesar Rodney High scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth to knock off Appoquinimink, 4-2, in nonconference softball on Monday afternoon.

The Riders improved to 10-5 after winning for the 10th time in their last 12 games. The Jaguars fell to 13-3.

Rosa’lynn Burton homered for CR while Kyra Watson doubled. Alyssa Ball scattered nine hits to earn the win.

Laurel 3, Smyrna 0: Kelsie Joseph homered and had a pair of RBI to spark the Bulldogs to the win.

Regan Green pitched a shutout while Susie Ryan and Kortney Lee had two hits each and Natalie Culver picked up an RBI.

Woodbridge 4, Sussex Tech 1: The Raiders won their third game in a row in a Henlopen Conference matchup.

Archmere 8, Delmarva Christian 3: The Auks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third before posting the Diamond Conference win.

St. Elizabeth 11, St. Thomas More 4: Pitcher Kara Scarangela struck out nine while Sierra Hadik and Rachel Sawicki both doubled for the Ravens.

Girls’ soccer

Lake Forest 4, Newark Charter 1: The Spartans netted four second-half goals to improve to 11-3.

Sussex Tech 5, Delmar 1: Michelle Laz scored four goals and assisted on the other to pace the Ravens.

Wuendy Cruz-Velasquez also scored for Sussex Tech while Leslie Fazio made six saves.

Julia Johnson made 11 saves for the Wildcats with Lauren Spicer scoring a goal.

Woodbridge 2, Sussex Central 1: Melanie Jerez and Brooke Joseph scored in the second half to lift the Raiders to the win.

Morgan Absher made six saves for Woodbridge, which outshot the Golden Knights, 35-7.

Delmarva Christian 3, Seaford 1: The Royals tallied three first-half goals in posting the nonconference win.

Baseball

Smyrna 22, Laurel 1: Winning pitcher Mike Carrow hit two home runs and drove in six runs to pace the Eagles.

Carrow threw a five-inning four-hitter and struck out eight.

Nolan Henderson, Shawn Dulin, John Barkley, Jared Gillis and Corey Everage also homered as Smyrna finished with 18 hits in the contest.

Archmere 17, Delmarva Christian 3: Chris Deely hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs to power the Auks.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Milford 26, Dickinson 1: Mathew Viramontes netted six goals and an assist as the Buccaneers improved to 13-1.

Ring Lardner (4 goals, 5 assists), Tyler Millman (3 goals), Dallas Rhodes (2 goals, 4 assists), Zachary Heesh (2 goals, 1 assist) and Cody Callaway (2 goals, 1 assist) also led Milford, which outshot the Rams, 43-5.

GIRLS, Middletown 16, Caesar Rodney 6: Delaney Steele and Kourtney Olsen (1 assist) scored two goals apiece for the Riders in the loss.

Maegan Stewart (1 assist) and Kacie Cava also scored goals while Kaitlyn Longest made 11 saves. The Cavaliers outshot CR, 34-23.

College baseball

DSU opens tourney vs. Bethune: Delaware State will face defending champion Bethune-Cookman in the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball tournament on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.

The Hornets are the No. 3 North seed after posting a 13-11 league record (14-27 overall). Bethune-Cookman is the No. 2 South seed. The Wildcats were 14-10 in MEAC play and 16-38 overall this year.

The winner of the DSU/Bethune-Cookman first round game will face No. 1 North seed Norfolk State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The loser will play an elimination game on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

Two Hornets named first-team all-MEAC: Delaware State centerfielder Charles Dailey and shortstop Cameron Onderko have been selected to the All-MEAC first team.

In addition, Hornet second baseman David Kimbrough and third baseman Chris Gonzalez were voted to the second team.

Dailey is tops in the MEAC in hitting (.365), runs per game (1.00) and slugging percentage (.596), while ranking second in the league in home runs (7) and triples (4); and fifth in on-base percentage (.438).

Onderko is second in the MEAC in walks (31) and fourth in on-base percentage (.441). He’s fifth among Hornet regulars with a .302 batting average, while ranking third on the team in RBI (26) and fifth in home runs (3).

Gonzalez ranks second in the MEAC in doubles per game (0.34) and third in on-base percentage (.448) and slugging percentage (.564). He’s tops on the Hornets with 30 runs batted in, third in hitting (.343) and tied for third in homers with five.

Kimbrough is batting .306 and is tied for the team lead with 13 steals. He ranks third in the league in stolen bases per game (0.36).

Hens’ Scott wins CAA award: Delaware freshman outfielder Calvin Scott was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.

The freshman batted .417 (5-for-12) with a double, home run, and five runs scored as Delaware went 3-1 in four road games last week. The Newark native also drew five walks in last week’s games and is currently riding a six-game hitting streak.

Wesley’s Domian makes all-CAC: Wesley College’s Matt Domian was named to the second team of the All-Capital Athletic Conference baseball team.

A senior catcher, Domian led the Wolverines with a .373 batting average and 26 RBI. In his three seasons at Wesley, Domian hit .310 with four home runs and 57 RBI to go with 42 runs scored, 88 base hits and 11 doubles.

College lacrosse

Three UD women honored: For the second straight season, the Delaware women’s lacrosse team has three players recognized by the IWLCA as All-Region honorees.

Senior Caitlin McCartney wraps up her Blue Hen career as a four-time All-Mid Atlantic Region selection after was named a first-team performer for the second time. Juniors Casey Lyons and Erin Wein earned second-team accolades for the second time.

Earlier this month, the trio received All-CAA first-team honors.

College golf

DelState third in tourney: The Delaware State women’s golf team posted its best-ever showing at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship, finishing third at the 29th annual event this past weekend.

The Hornets posted a combined score of 932, trailing only Bethune-Cookman (879) and Houston-Victoria (913). Bethune-Cookman captured its tournament record 12th championship.

Delaware State was tied with Texas Southern for third place heading into the final round, but the Hornets outshot the Tigers by two strokes on Sunday.

Delaware State’s Elaine Aisha Peete played the best golf of her career in the tournament, leading the Hornets with a three-day total of 226. Peete had career-best performances in each of the first two days of the tourney, firing a 74 in Friday’s opening round; and topping that with a 73 on Saturday. Her Saturday score was tied for second among all competitors for the round.

Suchada Anusuriya was second on the Hornets with a three-day total of 227, one stroke behind Peete. Anusuriya finished the tournament with a team-best 71 on Sunday, tops on the Hornets in the tournament and tied for fourth-best among all players in the round.

Delaware State’s Samyra Lewis posted a combined score of 241 to finish third on the team. She posted a weekend best 76 on Saturday.

Brooke Foster was fourth on the Hornets at 243. She had her best round of 78 on Sunday, six strokes better than the previous round.

DSU’s Ireanna Peete had a seven-stroke improvement with a 79 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a overall score of 246.
