The Sussex County all-stars came one run short of their quest to return to the Big League Softball championship game.

The U.S. West team escaped a bases-loaded jam in the last inning to hang on against the hosts, District III, 3-2 in the semifinals on Saturday night. The West will play Southeast today at noon in the championship while District III faces Asia-Pacific at 10 a.m. in a consolation game.

Sussex Country trailed 3-1 heading into the seventh but pulled within in a run when Courtney Tate doubled in a run and moved the tying run to third. A walk set up a bases loaded situation with one out.

But the West’s first baseman snagged a liner for an unassisted double play and the final two outs.

Shelby Wilkins had a solo homerun to lead the host squad. Hailey Andrews struck out three in four innings and Regan Green had six strikeouts in the final three innings.

Kent County (East) 6, Central 2: Harley Rickards hammered a grand slam to highlight a five-run third inning as the Kent County all-stars won its consolation game in the Big League Softball World Series on Saturday morning.

Kerrigan Simpson also had a RBI single in the third inning to score Cassetty Howerin. Rickards’ homer helped plate Simpson, Haylee Scruggs and Kasey Fry.

Fry had a single in the first inning which scored Whitney DeMora.

Simpson pitched all seven innings for Kent County and allowed two earned runs, three hits and two walks while striking out four.

Junior League baseball

West Salisbury (Md.) 5, Dover 0: Dover was held to just four hits and fell in its second game of the East Regional tournament.

The loss sends Dover into the losers’ bracket and it will face Pennsylvania today at 1 p.m.

Michael Carrington doubled for Dover while Dominic Velazquez, Eric Glass and Michael Baker each singled.

Senior League softball

District III (Host) 10, East 0: The hosts won the third place game at the Senior League World Series thanks in large part to an eight-run fourth inning.

Taylor Evick led the offense with a two-run homer and a pair of hits.

District III scored in the fourth on a RBI single by Mariah Rogers, a RBI single by Karleigh Carroll, a two-run error, a RBI double by Brooke Stoeckel, a RBI single by Rylee Shockley and Evick’s home run.

Shockley pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out eight.

West wins World Series: The Garden City Softball Little League, representing the West (6-0), took the 2015 Little League Senior Softball World Series title Saturday with a 10-0, six-inning win over the Central team (3-3) from Escanaba, Michigan.

The West won behind the pitching and batting of Macey Newberry, who pitched a one-hitter and scored three runs on a single, a double and a three-run home run. Taylor Homes also had three RBI.

Central’s Jerrika McAlpine broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth with a solid two-out single off Newberry but was stranded there with the final out.

Special Olympics

Coaches needed for fall season: Special Olympics is seeking volunteer coaches for the fall season in the sports of soccer, volleyball, bocce, long distance running, flag football and its Young Athletes program.

Practices conducted statewide once a week starting late August and running through October.

College golf

Hens add new recruit to women’s team: University of Delaware women’s golf head coach Patty Post has announced that Valentina Mueller has joined the program and will begin playing for the Blue Hens this fall.

Mueller, a native of St. Niklausen, Switzerland, was the 2014 Vice Champion at the 2014 Innerschweizer Championship, after earning Champion honors in the event the previous year. She also finished in second place at the St. Gallen Championship a year ago, and placed third in the U18 AJGT event in Vienna, Austria.

Mueller has competed in the Swiss Junior Championship three times, including a third place finish in the U18 tournament in 2013. She also was Vice Champion following a playoff in the Suisse Orientale Championship that year.
