I see Royal Farms has followed other large companies and decided to have customers essentially wait on themselves by using self-scanning machines. By and large, technology has made great strides in timesaving and other areas, but on the flip side, it has taken away the daily interaction humans need to exist in this world.
Supposedly, these changes save money, and God knows, no one wants to work these days with all the free money floating around. But come on, haven’t we mainstreamed enough already? The older generation, I’m sure, will have difficulty with this new process, and even though there is an employee to oversee the scanning operation, it’s ludicrous to introduce such a process in an already “shut the world out” society.
Maybe it’s a way to cope with the pending $15-per-hour minimum wage (which is also ludicrous), but the lasting effects will surely do more harm than good. Machines in and of themselves have saved folks from a lot of hard work, yet there is no substitute for that friendly “Good morning” or “Have a great day.” Society is missing out on so much because of all the technology, and huge corporations keep adding to the loss.
I guess the saying from generations past — “What’s the world coming to?” — applies today, as well. Before long, robots will rule and humans will be a thing of the past. Old school is best when it comes to human connection; there can never be a substitute.
