Letter to the Editor: Progressive climate action led by Sen. Coons is the best way forward

Posted

Now is the time to take aggressive measures against climate change. Thankfully, the First State can count on Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., to meet the moment. His recent legislation, the FAIR Transition and Competition Act, is exactly the type of action our country needs and represents the type of forward-thinking climate leadership for which he is known.

In the current environmental debate, we cannot lose sight of how best to protect communities who are disproportionately affected by climate change. By levying a fee on imported pollution, the FAIR Transition and Competition Act would reduce dangerous emissions, protect U.S. jobs and generate billions in revenue to invest here at home. The proposal would provide resources to front-line communities that are already experiencing rising sea levels and sinking incomes.

What’s more, charging importers for their pollution will inspire greater carbon-reduction efforts across the globe. The next step is to do the same here at home with a domestic carbon price — a natural complement to Sen. Coons’ proposal. The FAIR Transition and Competition Act will speed progress toward net zero emissions, while investing in our most vulnerable communities and a clean-energy future. It’s a smart proposal: The legislation puts people over profits and protects us from climate devastation.
