A recent letter by Beverly E. Monahan (“Democrats dream of big government,” July 4) was almost totally full of defective sentences.
She says the Democrats want to have majority power for “generations to come.” It looks to me — on the other hand — that it is: a.) Republicans who continue to gerrymander for their benefit and restrict voters not expected to vote Republican; and b.) Donald Trump’s massive but failed effort to overthrow (steal?) the 2020 election that are aimed to thwart democracy.
She says that “the (Joe) Biden administration is a failure and the ... world knows it.” On the contrary, both national and international polls show Biden with a substantially higher approval rating than Trump had.
She says all our southern border problems are Kamala Harris’ fault. Sorry, Monahan judged Harris by leaving out a fair review of Trump’s border wall that migrants easily climb over with little trouble (photos can be found on the internet). And Trump never got Mexico to pay for it like he promised.
She discusses the U.S.-China-North Korea-Iran situation like a cartoon story: “Iran was brought to its knees with the sanctions.” The detailed history is much more complicated than that and involved a covert CIA operation that installed the shah back in 1953 as a U.S. puppet dictator. (The CIA actually released the details in 2017 as per an internet search.) I would expect Iranians to have long-term hard feelings about this. Instead of talking about Biden’s failures, how about remembering one of Trump’s statements the day after he met with Kim Jong Un? He said North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat to the world. My eyes rolled on that one.
The rest of Monahan’s piece generally and exclusively trashes Democrats as if they are always all bad and Republicans are always all good. In the beginning of her letter, she says, “One-party rule is not democracy.” But at the conclusion of her essay, she clearly wishes for the “end” of Democrats. This contradicts her opening statement, but maybe one-party rule is OK with her as long as the party is Republican.
