Letter to the Editor: Gun proposals restrict law-abiding owners, won’t prevent crime

Posted

Senate Bill 3 would require a permit to purchase a handgun and mandate the same training as for a concealed-carry license, which could cost up to $300 and take two days. Waiting for training and a permit approval could extend time for handgun protection to several months.

The bill is discriminatory against those of lower economic status and those who can’t afford to spend hundreds or be absent from work for training. It is created to prevent those of limited resources from obtaining a handgun and will do nothing to reduce crime. Criminals don’t buy guns at gun stores and won’t go through training, purchase permits or undergo background checks or waiting periods. They steal or buy on the black market, getting guns instantly to use against Delawareans, while you would have to wait months to protect your family. This law will not reduce crime. Criminals love these laws and know there will be fewer guns to defend themselves against. No matter your age or experience you would have to dole out money, time and training to purchase your next handgun.

Senate Bill 6 would limit magazines for firearms to 17 rounds. It’s a useless bill and won’t prevent a single crime. Murder is already illegal. Thinking criminals would reconsider committing a crime because of a ban on magazine capacity is as ridiculous as this proposal is.

If you believe restrictions on firearms or accessories will stop a deranged individual from killing, you are delusional. Boulder, Colorado, already had a magazine ban, yet 10 were killed there. In the Columbine and Parkland school shootings, only 10-round magazines were used. Can a magazine ban help change or reduce any crime? No, it only affects the law-abiding Delaware citizens.

Many rifles used for target shooting/completion are 60-plus years old, and smaller magazines are not available for them. Magazines cost $20-$70-plus, but only $15,000 is allocated for this, so what happens when that money runs out?

Again, both these bills, SB 3 and SB 6, only affect law-abiding Delaware citizens. Criminals do not follow the law or care in the least.

It’s a travesty how our legislators treat Delaware citizens as criminals. We can do nothing about these restrictive, discriminatory, possibly illegal laws. We’re not allowed in Legislative Hall. The current setup seems to limit the people’s ability to be involved in Zoom meetings, and people are only granted a limited time to speak.

We have no say in our government. They are the ruling class, and we are now the peasants, the serfs. They gratuitously “permit” us to speak for a few seconds, then they wave us away and do as they please. We are no longer citizens of Delaware; we are only numbers for taxation. Our opinion means nothing. They no longer represent the people of Delaware. They rule us. I believe that they have forgotten the sentence in the state constitution that includes “all just authority in the institutions of political society is derived from the people, and established with their consent.”
