Letter to the Editor: Cancel the cancellation culture

Posted

What will be canceled next by the folks who envision themselves as the all-wise and all-knowing?

Among the “cancellations” are Dr. Seuss books and Mr. Potato Head. What real perversion did these children’s interests really do?  If we listen to the holier-than-thou, great damage has been done to our psyche.

Most children did not view their enjoyment in reading and playtime in the same way as do those who now categorize it as disgraced. Children are beautifully innocent of the dangers that the cancellation culture perceive as things to be eliminated before — according to their beliefs — we develop into non-compassionate human beings.

Initially begun by removing historic statues and memorabilia that were offensive to many individuals, cancellation became so extensive that fault could be found in anything someone decided was harmful to us all. Where will it end? Will Santa Claus be condemned as just a fat, old man wearing a strange crimson suit and too lengthy a beard? Or the Easter Bunny, who could become someone’s Easter pie? Or a leprechaun, who might cause an uprising in today’s Dublin or anywhere that he can be seen and enjoyed?

No matter how good their intentions, these efforts are erasing American history. All that should be preserved — the good, the bad and the ugly. Learning from bitter mistakes is a positive experience, not the perception that if they are removed they have never existed. All these events have made our beloved country America.

Are these cancellation warriors actually the ones we should be concerned with? Yes, the powers they now possess are as restrictive, controlling and damaging as whatever they view as dangerous and harmful. These controlling individuals are issuing their views as the law of the land. Not the land we have been blessed with, have lived in and respected due to our individual rights to decide for ourselves what is right and acceptable. Common sense seems to have evaded these dedicated forces.

America was not founded to be prohibitive of personal, independent individual freedoms. Quite the opposite. The Founders believed they were being controlled by a restrictive, prohibitive, mentally limited King George III, who was not ruling on America’s behalf or benefit.

The cancellation culture is determined to quash that freedom based upon their all-knowing wisdom. No American wants to be told what must be demanded of them by any anonymous entity.

Of course, no one should be allowed to suffer from any verbal or physical attacks due to someone’s power over that individual. We must always have the ability and authority to seek legal justice, not to be told instructions by any unauthorized outside force.

America stands for freedoms often not allowed by powerful political parties, dictators and/or rulers in many countries. We want that freedom to survive and flourish, not to be arbitrarily told what is right and wrong. That is not the American way. Change is good but not when radical and enforced criteria that any group can inflict upon others. Logic and stability must prevail, not the radicalism we endure carried forth by these mysterious, powerful forces who continue to justify their injustice.

May God always bless the United States of America!
