FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Fort the first time in her career, Dover’s Madison Brengle had advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open.

The 25-year-old needed just an hour to knock off fellow American Anna Tatishvili, 6-3, 6-2, in her second round women’s singles match on Wednesday morning in the last Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year.

Brengle, who lost in the second round of the U.S. Open a year ago, reached the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this year.

“It’s just been a steady progression for me,” Brengle said about her success this year. “Everybody kind of goes at their own pace. I’ve just been working hard and it’s paying off. I can’t complain.”

Tatishvil, who knocked off the eighth seed in her first-round match, owned a 4-2 lead in career matches against Brengle coming into Wednesday. But, in a match where both players dominated in games they served at times, Brengle took control by breaking Tatishvili’s serve to go up 4-3 in the first set.

Brengle won the final two points of that game to win it. She then took the final two games to close out the set.

In the second set, the match was tied 2-2 when Brengle broke Tatishvili’s serve again to take the momentum.

This time she ended up winning the final five games to earn her ticket to the third round. Brengle will play again on Friday against the winner of the second round between Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who is ranked No. 31 in the world, and Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

In Wednesday’s victory, Brengle made just six unforced errors compared to 34 for Tatishvili,

“I was pretty happy,” said Brengle, who entered the tourney ranked No. 47 in the world. “I saw on the stats in the first set that I was in single digits (in unforced errors). I was like, I really can’t complain today.”
