Delaware State Fair cancels six concerts

HARRINGTON — The Delaware State Fair announced Wednesday that six shows in this year’s concert lineup have been canceled due to protocols associated with the ongoing pandemic.

They are Sam Hunt (July 22), TobyMac featuring Love & The Outcome (July 26), Tedeschi Trucks Band with St. Paul & the Broken Bones (July 27), the “I Love the 90s” Tour featuring Vanilla Ice, All-4-One, Young MC and The Funky Bunch (July 30) and Hank Williams Jr. with The Desert City Ramblers (July 31).

Riley Green with HARDY and Jon Langston, which was set for July 28, will be split over two shows. Mr. Green will play July 26 with another artist to be announced, and HARDY will perform with Mr. Langston on July 28.

The previously scheduled show with Lauren Alaina and Maddie & Tae on July 24 will go on. The children’s show, “Blippi: The Musical,” will now be performed twice — on July 23 at 3 and 6 p.m. The demolition derby (July 25) and harness racing (July 29) will remain on the schedule.

The canceled shows will be replaced by other events. The Renegade Monster Truck Tour will race through July 22; country stars Tracy Byrd and Jo Dee Messina will play July 27; and contemporary Christian performers Zach Williams and Stephen Stanley will play the final night of the fair July 31.

Full refunds of concert tickets and service fees for individuals who purchased them from the Delaware State Fair will be processed beginning Thursday. Tickets for the new shows will go on sale April 21 at 10 a.m. on the website.

During a Facebook Live session Wednesday, Delaware State Fair assistant general manager Danny Aguilar explained that the total capacity of the M&T Grandstand will be taken from 8,200 people down to 2,500, which made some of the larger shows untenable. However, in the case of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, that whole tour has been canceled.

“In consultation with the Delaware (Division) of Public Health, in order to hold concerts this year, we had to alter and change our seating configuration to include the necessary social distancing,” he said.

There will no be pit or VIP seating this year, and those seats will be converted into pods.

“So what we’re doing on the track is, we’re going to be creating 222 pods. That’s going to be set on the track area, and there’ll be four seats per pod on the track. Now, that is for social distancing purposes only,” he said.

“So this means the track capacity, which generally is about between 3,000 to 4,000 tickets, will literally go down to 888.”

In the stadium and grandstand, seating will be limited to every other row with two dedicated seats empty between each ticket-buying group. Tickets for shows will be sold in pods of two, four or six.

July 30 is an open date right now; however, Mr. Aguilar said, “We are looking potentially at a rock show, but we’re hard at work trying to get that night filled as quickly as possible.”

Additionally, the “Roots and Boots” show with Sammy Kershaw, Collin Raye and Aaron Tippin, scheduled for June 12 at Quillen Arena, has been canceled.

All tickets will be refunded for that show, as well.
