MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is on track for a “full recovery” after a lengthy absence following his collapse at a training session, assistant Aaron Danks said Friday.
Kompany has been out of action for two weeks since collapsing at a reserve team training session on Oct. 23. He was hospitalized and treated for meningeal irritation, which is an inflammation of the tissue around the brain or spinal cord.
“I’ve had a few really good phone calls with Vince," Danks said. “He seems very positive and appears to be well on the way to a full recovery. The international break provides a good opportunity to reflect and see when he can return.”
Danks remains in charge for Bayern's game against Mainz on Saturday in the Bundesliga, the team's fifth since Kompany's collapse. After that, an international break means Bayern doesn't play again until Nov. 20.
During Kompany's time away from the club, Harry Kane has became the first Bayern player in 45 years to win the Ballon d'Or and signed a contract extension, while Bayern drew with German rival Borussia Dortmund and beat Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, and also suffered a string of injuries.
Bayern has set a club policy of not involving Kompany in soccer discussions during his time recovering at home after he was released from hospital.
Kane admitted Kompany may not have known in advance when his contract extension was announced Thursday.
