Sweet Angel Boy wins Governor's Cup race at Delaware State Fair

HARRINGTON – Art Stafford drove Sweet Angel Boy to a win in 1:53.2 in the Governor’s Cup pace Thursday night at the Delaware State Fair.

Gov. John Carney, joined by Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long in the winner’s circle, presented the cup to trainer Bobby Glassmeyer after the $50,000 race.

It was Sweet Angel Boy’s seventh win of the year. A win bet was worth $4.80.

The night of racing is Harriington’s richest program of the season with more than $650,000 in total purses. All of the races on the 13-race program were for Delaware owned and/or bred horses.

The Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund $110,000 final events for 3-year-olds comprised much of the purse allocation, in addition to long-time events for older horses like the $50,000 Governor’s Cup.

Driver Tim Tetrick had four wins on the card, including two for trainer Jim King Jr. in DSBF finals with filly pacer Curtsyforpurrseco ($3.40) in 1:56.1, owned by Jo Ann Looney-King and male trotter Brett MacDonald’s Workslikeacharm ($7.60) in 1:59.3.

Curtsyforpurrseco (Roddy’s Bags Again) overcame post 8 in her 11th career win, while Workslikeacharm (E L Platinum) was second placed first after Royal Beep Beep was disqualified after failing to lose ground while on a break and leaving the course.

The DSBF male pacing final saw Captain Pete ($3.80, Allan Davis) win in wire-to-wire fashion from post 8 in 1:55 for owners Mulligan and Calcutta Stables and Denise Davis. The Roddy’s Bags Again gelding notched his 8th career win in 12 starts for trainer Jason Johnson.

In the filly trotting final, Gary Rhodes’ Lovie’s Place ($3.40, Art Stafford Jr.) was a lifetime best-1:57.3 winner for her 6th career win for her trainer/driver. The EL Platinum filly is unbeaten in 4 starts this year.

On the undercard, Steve Messick’s Misty Coast ($4.80, Stafford Jr.) was a 1:53.2 winner in the $35,000 Legislator’s Cup and Tlb Racing’s Remarkable De Vie ($4.80, Pat Berry) was victorious in 1:57.3 in the $35,000 Charles Murphy Jr. Memorial Trot.

The live racing meet will return to Harrington on August 12.
