SMYRNA — Investigation into possible professional misconduct in a Smyrna Elementary School classroom in February continues, authorities said Thursday.

According to Smyrna Police spokesperson Lt. Brian Donner, the probe is “still very much ongoing in conjunction with the (Delaware Department of Justice Special Victims Unit).”

On Thursday, Superintendent Dr. Susan Brown said the Smyrna School District concurred with the Smyrna Police on the investigation’s status and had no further comment.

An attempt to reach the Delaware Department of Justice on Thursday was unsuccessful.

In a statement via Facebook in February, Dr. Brown said the district received a report on Feb. 16 “alleging possible professional misconduct in a classroom at Smyrna Elementary School.

“As part of our multi-faceted approach to keep our students safe, we have taken all precautions, including contacting law enforcement and providing alternative staff to instruct students.

“The investigation is active and on-going.”

In a followup statement, Dr. Brown said, “While I cannot go into detail, due to the ongoing investigation, I can assure you that the professional misconduct being investigated is not sexual in nature.”
