MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Malachi Toney had a school-record 16 catches, Dariah Mensah threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns and No. 1 Miami rolled past Pitt 52-23 in the Hurricanes' first game as the nation’s top-ranked team in nearly 24 years. Toney finished with 194 receiving yards and three touchdown catches, while Javian Mallory rushed for two scores and Mark Fletcher Jr. moved into the No. 2 spot on the school’s all-time list with the 33rd rushing TD of his career for the Hurricanes. Miami native Blue Hicks had five catches for 149 yards and a touchdown for Pitt.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Ethan Grunkemeyer threw two touchdown passes to tight end Luke Reynolds, including a 5-yard strike with 1:44 left in the game to lift Virginia Tech to a 20-16 come-from-behind win over Clemson on Saturday night. Grunkemeyer finished 20 of 32 for 156 yards with the two TDs and had no interceptions for Virginia Tech. Tait Reynolds threw for 20 of 26 for 153 yard and ran for a 16-yard touchdown for Clemson. Trailing 16-13, Grunkemeyer led an 11-play, 69-yard scoring drive to take the lead, aided by two Clemson pass interference penalties and a late hit out of bounds resulting in three first downs.

UNDATED (AP) — N.C. State has fired coach Dave Doeren a day after the Wolfpack's loss at Stanford. The school announced the move Saturday, ending Doeren's 14-season tenure. The coach set the program’s career wins mark but could not make a breakthrough leap to higher success. The 54-year-old Doeren had a 98-74 record with the Wolfpack and became the program's winningest coach in 2023. Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season. N.C. State was 3-4 after the Stanford loss.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney has reached the 2,000-yard mark for his career, joining Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith as the only active Football Bowl Subdivision players to achieve this by the end of their sophomore season. Toney reached the milestone Saturday in his 23rd career game when the top-ranked Hurricanes beat Pitt 52-23. He is the 11th player in Miami history to reach the 2,000-yard receiving mark and the 21st currently active player to do so at the FBS level. The milestone catch came on a 20-yard pass from Miami quarterback Darian Mensah late in the first quarter. He also set a Miami school record with 16 catches — the most by any Football Bowl Subdivision player in a game this season.

DALLAS (AP) — Kevin Jennings threw three touchdowns to break SMU’s career record, Kendrick Raphael ran for 104 yards while accounting for three scores and the No. 23 Mustangs beat California 59-20. The 6-1 Mustangs trailed at halftime before scoring touchdowns on their first six drives after the break. The second of those scores was Jennings’ record-breaking 73rd career TD pass, a 21-yarder to Derek McFall. Jennings finished 16-of-23 passing for 223 yards. Freshman running back Christian Rhodes had TD runs of 5 and 3 yards in SMU’s scoring surge in the second half, which 3-5 Cal opened with three consecutive three-and-outs after having a 20-17 lead.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Calvin Russell III caught a 4-yard touchdown, and the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, to give Syracuse a 31-30 overtime win over North Carolina. The Tar Heels had opened the extra session with a Demon June 3-yard touchdown catch. It marked the first ACC win of the season for the Orange, who improved to 3-4 overall.

ATLANTA (AP) — Quarterback Mason McKenzie ran for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Bo MacCormack III had 155 rushing yards and three TDs, and Boston College bounced back from an early 10-point deficit to pound out a 49-27 victory over Georgia Tech. The Eagles improved to 4-3 with 399 yards on the ground, brushing off a dismal kicking game that missed a field goal and two extra points. Charlie Comella had a pair of second-half interceptions off Alberto Mendoza, returning the second 55 yards for a touchdown that blew the game open. Georgia Tech dropped to 2-5.

UNDATED (AP) — Miami had no problem passing its first test as the No. 1 team in the AP Top 25. No. 2 BYU wasn’t as fortunate. Playing with their highest ranking since 1984, the Cougars lost 39-31 in two overtimes to UCF and the ranks of the unbeaten thinned to Miami, UCLA and Utah. UCF was among five unranked teams to knock off ranked opponents. No. 8 Texas Tech lost to Cincinnati, No. 11 Tennessee to South Carolina, No. 15 Iowa to Minnesota and No. 16 Southern California to Wisconsin.
