Posted

SMYRNA — Residents in the Smyrna School District can vote Saturday on a two-pronged referendum designed to raise money for capital projects and operating expenses.

The capital projects and operating expenses proposals by the school district are separate items to be voted on.

If both the capital and operating budget items are approved, the average property owner would see an annual tax increase of around $278.

The capital expense would cost an extra $35.10 for fiscal year 2025, then drop slightly for the next four years until it's paid off. The total bill for the capital item is  roughly $8.6 million, the district said.

Additionally, district officials noted that operating expenses would cost $242.98 yearly and continue in perpetuity. In total, its annual cost would be approximately $5.5 million.

According to the district, additional operating expenses will support:

• The hiring of constables for every building.

• The delivery of mental health supports in every building.

• Competitive salaries.

• Student instructional technology materials.

• Extracurricular activities for the new middle school.

The capital money for previously approved projects affected by inflation, including:

• The construction of an intermediate school on Rabbit Chase Lane.

• The expansion and conversion of Clayton Intermediate School to Clayton Middle School.

• The expansion of North Elementary School.

Residents can vote from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Smyrna Elementary School, Smyrna Middle School and Clayton Intermediate School.

A voter must be at least 18 and a U.S. citizen, and does not have to own a home or have students in the district. Proof of address is required via a driver’s license, state identification, passport or utility bill.
