Motorcycle operator killed in Middletown collision

Posted

MIDDLETOWN — A 24-year-old Bear man was killed Tuesday after the motorcycle he was operating struck a vehicle.

At approximately 10:53 p.m., a red 2017 Mazda CX-5 was stopped in the left-turn lane at Summit Bridge Road north and Armstrong Corner Road. A blue 2003 Harley-Davidson FLS was passing traffic at a high rate of speed on the right shoulder of Summit Bridge Road south, approaching the intersection, Delaware State Police said.

With a flashing red arrow, the CX-5 proceeded through the intersection, turning left toward Armstrong Corner Road west. The motorcycle continued traveling south on Summit Bridge Road and entered the crossing from the right-turn lane, striking the right side of the CX-5, police said. The motorcyclist was ejected and came to rest under the vehicle.

The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of kin.

The CX-5’s driver, a 17-year-old Middletown male, was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The road was closed for approximately four hours.

The Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asks witnesses to contact Cpl. D. Franck at 302-660-3783, send a message via the state police Facebook page or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
