Delaware students aim to become teachers

DOVER — Forty-two Delaware high school students engaged in the National Day of Signing event on May 2 at the Old State House.

Delaware’s Educators Rising students, part of Delaware Pathway’s Teacher Academy program of study, signed letters of intent to pursue a degree in education.

The aspiring educators committed to 12 post-secondary institutions, including Delaware Technical Community College, Delaware State University, University of Delaware, and Wilmington University.

Dr. Mark Holodick, Delaware Secretary of Education, helped celebrate the students’ accomplishments and reminded them of the importance of their decision to become changemakers in education.

Students were joined by family members, local district and higher education representatives, Sen. Kyra Hoffner, D-Dover, Rep. Kim Williams, D-Newport, Delaware Department of Education staff, and other honored guests.

Michael Hill-Shaner, education associate for the program, honored the students’ academic achievements and successes in Career and Technical Education.

“This was not the students’ first steps to becoming a teacher; this was more an amazing milestone in their career,” said Mr. Hill-Shaner. “Through their courses and experiences in Career and Technical Education, these students have been given a head start in becoming the next generation of teachers.”

As Delaware districts continue to face an educator shortage, the Teacher Academy pathway has seen an increase in student enrollment. For more information, visit Delaware Pathways and Delaware Educators Rising.
