Odyssey of the Mind contest in Townsend sends 69 teams to states

Posted

TOWNSEND — The Odyssey of the Mind organization focuses on creative activities and problem solving, allowing students to expand their thinking.

On Saturday, hundreds of creative kids — from the youngest elementary schoolers to seniors in high school — took part in a Delaware Odyssey of the Mind qualifying competition at Odessa High School.

And 69 of their teams earned spots in the state tournament, at Milford High School on April 13.

In preparation for the contest, the teams were presented five problems, each involving an issue for which the members must create a solution.

For instance, one situation requires the students to design, create and run a small vehicle to a imaginary drive-in movie. The vehicle drives to the movie, while special effects envelop the creation.

Other problems are labeled “technical,” “classics,” “structure” and “performance.” There is also a primary problem, open for kindergartners to second graders.

Along with the question that each team solves and presents, there is the “spontaneous” competition, which requires participants to think on their feet to solve a previously unknown case in 10 minutes.

The 69 teams that qualified for states will vie for a spot at the Odyssey of the Mind world finals in Iowa in May.
