State police receive phone scam reports targeting Sussex County

Posted

MILTON —_Delaware State Police on Monday said it has received reports of phone scams targeting Sussex County communities.

The scammers, police said on Facebook, claim to be from various police departments, including Milton, Lewes, and Millsboro. They falsely state that individuals missed jury duty and have warrants out for their arrest.

Police outlined how the scam worked:

• Caller ID Spoofing: Scammers spoof legitimate numbers, like Sussex Emergency Operations Center (302-855-2980), to appear credible.

• Demand for Money: Victims are told to pay a sum of money to clear the warrant.

Also, authorities offered important safety tips

• Do not wire money or provide personal information to unsolicited callers.

• Verify the caller’s identity by contacting your local police department directly.

• Verify the status of jury duty by contacting your local courthouse directly to verify any claims regarding jury duty.

• Remember, law enforcement will never demand payment over the phone.

DSP said that if you receive such a call, hang up immediately.
