Roundup: Sussex Central rallies past Laurel in baseball; Cape Henlopen reaches softball semis

Noah Burrough’s fifth-inning grand slam lifted top-seeded Sussex Central to a 6-2 victory over No. 17 Laurel in the second round of the DIAA baseball state tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights (16-2) trailed 2-1 before putting up five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Central moves on to face No. 9 Saint Mark’s (16-4) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sports at the Beach.

Peter Onuschak pitched a complete-game six-hitter, allowing only one earned run with 10 strikeouts.

The Henlopen South champion Bulldogs, who finish with a record 11-10, scored both their runs in the top of the first.

Sussex Tech 12, Red Lion Christian 5: The second-seeded Ravens advanced to the state quarterfinals win the win on Saturday.

Henlopen Conference champion Sussex Tech (17-3) will host No. 7 William Penn (15-4) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Middletown 5, Cape Henlopen 4: Carter Boyd drove in a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as the No. 19 Cavaliers upended the No. 3 Vikings in the state tourney’s second round.

The two runs in the sixth gave Middletown a 5-2 lead before it held off Cape Henlopen (16-3), which could only answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Cavs (12-8) will take a four-game winning streak into a quarterfinal game at No. 6 Caesar Rodney on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Vikings, who started the season 10-0, had a four-game winning streak snapped. Trey Hitchcock hit a solo home run, Isaac Terhune had two RBI and Brian Fleming had two hits.

William Penn 11, Delmar 2: The No. 7 Colonials used a five-run third to open up an 8-0 lead before downing the No. 10 Wildcats.

William Penn (15-4) goes to No. 2 Sussex Tech on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. quarterfinal contest.

Ryder Keidel had an RBI double with Blair Davis adding two hits for Delmar (12-8).

Softball

Cape Henlopen 14, Saint Mark’s 4: A five-run second helped spark the No. 6 Vikings past the No. 3 Spartans in Saturday’s DIAA state quarterfinals.

Cape Henlopen (17-4) moves on to a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Sussex Central. That contest will be played on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Sussex Tech.

The Golden Knights edged the Vikings, 5-4, on April 23.

On Saturday, Saint Mark’s cut Cape Henlopen’s lead to 7-4 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. But the Vikings responded with three runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to put away the win.

Ava Calciano (3 runs) and Alivia Heers (4 hits) both hit a homer and had five RBI for the Vikings, who finished with 16 hits. Hayden Hudson (2 RBI) also homered.

Caravel 6, Smyrna 5: The No. 8 Eagles rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh before falling short against the top-seeded Buccaneers on Saturday.
Caravel (16-1) will host No. 5 Laurel (15-5) at 5 p.m. in Wednesday’s semifinals.

The Bucs have won their last six games by one or two runs.

Hailey McCutchan had two hits and drove in three runs for Smyrna (13-7) while Cimone Edge and Alexis Dennis also had a pair of hits.

Laurel 4, Caesar Rodney 3: The fifth-seeded Bulldogs got past the No. 13 Riders to reach the state semis.

The Riders, who finish 11-10, lost four one-run games this season.

Sussex Central 1, Appoquinimink 0: The No. 2 Golden Knights edged the No. 7 Jaguars to get back to the semifinals.

Central (18-3) will face No. 6 Cape Henlopen at 4 p.m. at Sussex Tech in Wednesday’s state semifinals. The Knights are trying to reach the finals for the third time in the past four seasons.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 19, Saint Mark’s 3: Burke Healy netted seven goals and three assists as the No. 2 Vikings rolled past the No. 10 Spartans in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Cape Henlopen (14-4) will host No. 3 Caesar Rodney on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Anderson Smith (1 assist) and Michael Guenther (2 assists) both added three goals as eight players scored goals.
