CAMDEN — A year ago, Tatnall knocked Cape Henlopen High’s girls’ lacrosse team off its pedestal.

But it didn’t take the Vikings long to regain its usual spot.

Top-seeded Cape Henlopen downed No. 2 Tatanall, 12-8, on Thursday night to capture the DIAA state championship for the 14th time in the last 15 seasons.

It was the third straight year that the Vikings and Hornets have met in the state finals with Cape Henlopen winning two of the contests.

The Vikings finish the season a perfect 18-0. It’s the first time Cape Henlopen has gone unbeaten in a season since 2019.

On Thursday, in a game played at Caesar Rodney, the Vikings out-scored Tatnall, 6-4, in each half. A 6-3 third-quarter run put Cape Henlopen up 12-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Seniors Lyndsey D’Ambrogi (2 assists) and Louise Rishko both netted three goals for the Vikings. Cape Henlopen was also paced by Claire Lopez (2 goals, 1 assist), Haley Gamuciello (2 goals), Mairead Rishko (1 goal) and Ally Diehl (1 goal).

Baseball

Dover 6, Archmere 4: The No. 11 Senators made their state tournament appearance in three years a successful on Thursday afternoon.

The 11th-straight win for Dover (14-5) gives the Senators a second-round game at No. 6 Caesar Rodney (13-5) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Sophomore pitcher Julian Christman earned the win after striking out eight in five innings. Kole Turner, Carter Bean and Ryan Perkins each had two hits and an RBI.

Austin Chambers, who earned a save, Christman (RBI) both added hits for

Dover, which led 6-3 after scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth.

The Senators opened the season with a 9-7 loss to CR on March 21.

Laurel 8, Polytech 4: The No. 17 Bulldogs used a five-run second inning and then a three-run seventh to edge the No. 16 Panthers in the tournament opener.

Laurel (11-9) advances to a second-round game at top-seeded Sussex Central (15-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs led 5-3 going into the seventh. Polytech, which finishes the season 11-8, rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Delmar  7, Indian River 2: The 10th-seeded Wildcats downed the No. 23 Indians in the first-round matchup.

Delmar (12-7) will play at No. 7 William Penn (14-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Caravel 1, Woodbridge 0: The No. 12 Buccaneers got past the No. 21 Blue Raiders on Thursday.

Caravel (11-7) plays at No. 7 Sanford (16-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Saint Mark’ 12, Lake Forest 4: No. 9 Saint Mark’s led 6-1 before putting the contest out of reach with a six-run fourth.

Saint Mark’s (15-4) will play at No. 8 Concord (15-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Senior Rhett Robbins went 3-for-4 for Lake Forest, which finishes its season 8-11.

Softball

Caesar Rodney 2, Lake Forest 1: The No. 13 Riders upset the No. 4 Spartans in the second round of the tourney.

Caesar Rodney (11-9) will play at fifth-seeded Laurel (14-5) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Lake Forest, which won the Henlopen Conference title earlier this week, ends the season 17-3.The Spartans beat the Riders, 2-1, during the regular season.

Cape Henlopen 8, Polytech 2: The sixth-seeded Vikings built a 6-0 lead after four innings before downing the No. 11 Panthers in the DIAA state tournament’s second round.

Cape Henlopen (15-4) plays at No. 3 Saint Mark’s (15-3) on Saturday at a time TBA.

Winning pitcher Abby Marsh pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts for the Vikings who got a home run from junior Ava Calciano.

Smyrna 6, Conrad 2: The No. 8 Eagles led 4-0 after the second inning before posting the second-round win.

Smyrna (13-6) will play at top-seeded Caravel (15-1) on Saturday at a time TBA. The Eagles, who have won seven games in a row, lost to Caravel, 4-0, early in the season.

Sussex Central 5, Wilmington Charter 2: The No. 2 Golden Knights advanced to the state quarterfinals with the victory.

Sussex Central (17-3) will host No. 7 Appoquinimink on Saturday.

Laurel 5, Indian River 0: The Bulldogs (14-5) advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals where they will host No. 13 Caesar Rodney at 11 a.m.

Caravel 6, Delmar 3: The No. 1 Buccaneers had to overcome an early 3-0 deficit to down the No. 17 Wildcats.

Emily Smith had two hits and scored a run for Delmar (9-11) while freshman Macy Rickards limited Caravel to four hits.

Girls’ soccer

Padua 5, Polytech 1: The No. 6 Pandas scored twice in the first 15 minutes before topping the No. 3 Panthers in the Division I state quarterfinals on Thursday.

Ava Gzym scored for Henlopen North champion Polytech (11-3-2), which got four saves from Marie Cadet..

Padua (7-8) out-shot the Panthers, 12-6, and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Tennis

Emrich wins girls’ title: Top-seeded Ava Emrich topped No. 3 Gracie Clark of Caesar Rodney, 6-2, 6-4, to win the DIAA state title at girls’ first singles on Thursday.

Emrich played her freshman season at Smyrna High. She won all four of her state tournament matches in straight sets.
