WILMINGTON — The Latin American Community Center has announced the recipients of the 2024 Minerva Marrero Hispanic Scholarship Program.

In its second year, the scholarship was formerly known as the Hispanic Student Recognition Program.

In 2024, $25,000 worth of funding will be administered to seven Hispanic high school seniors. It will be split into three $5,000 awards, two $3,000 awards and two $2,000 awards.

The following have been chosen:

  • Jackelyn Escobar and Yamileth Lopez Renoj — Sussex Central High School
  • Rocio Garduno Castandeda — Delcastle Technical High School
  • Vivian Felipe Lucas — Indian River High School
  • Suzely Perez Gonzalez — Woodbridge High School
  • Maria Luisa Quinonez — Dover High School
  • Emily Rodriguez — Conrad Schools of Science

The Latin American Community Center received over 50 applications, representing all three Delaware counties and 11 school districts. Winners were selected by a five-member external committee that reviewed each applicant’s academics, community service, personal statement and interview.

The Minerva Marrero Hispanic Scholarship Program is named for one of the Hispanic Student Recognition Program founders.

The center will hold an award ceremony to celebrate these students and their families in August.

Individuals interested in sponsoring the ceremony can contact kscanlan@thelatincenter.org.
