Roundup: Sussex Central, Sussex Tech in baseball semis; Polytech, Caesar Rodney contending in golf

Top-seeded Sussex Central High used a six-run secod inning to take control before topping No. 9 Saint Mark’s in the DIAA baseball state quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory sends the Golden Knights to Thursday’s semifinals where they will face No. 13 Salesianum (14-7) at Frawley Stadium at 2 p.m.

Joaquin Rodriguez had three of Central’s seven hits with three RBI. Pitchers Osiah Kelley and Noah Burroughs held the Spartans to four runs on nine hits.

Sussex Tech 2, William Penn 0: The second-seeded Ravens reached the state semifinals with the win over the No. 7 Colonials on Tuesday.

Sussex Tech (18-3) will take on No. 6 Caesar Rodney on Thursday at Frawley Stadium at 11 a.m.

The Ravens avenged a 5-0 loss to William Penn by posting its fifth shutout of the season.

GOLF

Polytech's Yiengst leads girls’ division: Polytech High’s Kylie Yiengst carded a three-under-par 69 to lead the girls’ division of the DIAA state tournament after the opening day on Tuesday.

Indian River’s Sarah Lydic is one shot back after shooting a 70 in the two day event being played at Maple Dale Country C;ub.

In the boys’ division, Tatnall’s Jack Homer carded the lone under-par round with a 71. He tallied four birdies and three bogeys. Homer’s teammate, Win Thomas, the defending champion, sits in second place with a 73.

The top boys’ player from the Henlopen Conference is Caesar Rodney’s Gavin Garrison, who is tied for fourth with a 76.

Tatnall leads the team standings with a score of 310, followed by Polytech at 311 and Caesar Rodney at 313.

The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties for Wednesday’s final round. The cut stopped at 87 for both divisions.
