Roundup: Middletown girls cruise past Caesar Rodney; Cape Henlopen in lacrosse finals

Top-seeded Middletown High netted six second-half goals to pull away to an 8-0 win over No.4 Caesar Rodney in the DIAA Division I girls’ soccer state semifinals on Wednesday night.

The victory puts the Cavaliers (17-0) in Saturday’s state championship game where they face No. 2 Appoquinimink at Cape Henlopen at 3 p.m.

The Jaguars (14-2-1) beat Padua, 2-0, in Wednesday’s other semifinal. Middletown downed intra-district rival Appo, 3-1, on May 3.

Caesar Rodney finishes the season with a record of 12-4-1.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape to face Sals again: Second-seeded Cape Henlopen will face No. 1 Salesianum in the DIAA state finals for the fifth straight season.

The contest is tentataively set for Saturday at Delaware Military at 3 p.m.

The Sals beat Archmere, 16-8, in the state semifinals on Wednesday night while the Vikings beat Caesar Rodney, 16-4..

Nationally-ranked Sallies will be trying to win its fourth state championship in a row. The Sals beat Cape, 18-4, on May 14.

Against the Riders, Cape scored five unanswered goals in the first quarter but led only 6-3 at halftime.Anderson Smith, Evan Burris and Brenner Short had three goals apiece for the Vikings.

Softball

Sussex Central 7, Cape Henlopen 2: The second-seeded Golden Knights scored the game’s last five runs on Wednesday to advance to the DIAA state finals.

Sussex Central will be in the state championship game for the third time in the last four years when it plays for the title on Friday at 7 p.m. at the University of Delaware.

Wednesday’s other semifinal. between Laurel and Caravel, was postponed by stormy conditions. That contest is slated to be played at noon today at Caravel.

Madge Layfield pitched a one-hitter and also homered for Central (19-3) while Takyla Davis hit a homer and two doubles.

The Vikings, who lost to the Knights 5-4 during the regular season, finish with a record of 16-5 after having a four-game winning streak snapped. Cape tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

Baseball

Sussex Central 9, Saint Mark’s 4: Top-seeded Sussex Central High used a six-run secod inning to take control before topping No. 9 Saint Mark’s in the DIAA baseball state quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory sends the Golden Knights to Thursday’s semifinals where they will face No. 13 Salesianum (14-7) at Frawley Stadium at 2 p.m.

Joaquin Rodriguez had three of Central’s seven hits with three RBI. Pitchers Osiah Kelley and Noah Burroughs held the Spartans to four runs on nine hits.

Sussex Tech 2, William Penn 0: The second-seeded Ravens reached the state semifinals with the win over the No. 7 Colonials on Tuesday.

Sussex Tech (18-3) will take on No. 6 Caesar Rodney on Thursday at Frawley Stadium at 11 a.m.

The Ravens avenged a 5-0 loss to William Penn by posting their fifth shutout of the season. Winning pitcher Jeremy Vest threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Sussex Tech, which scored both its runs in the bottom of the third, got a pair of hits from Rosnell Lewis. It was the fifth game the Ravens have won this season with three runs or less.

College football

Delaware to face Pitt in ‘29: Delaware announced today that it will open the 2029 football season at Pittsburgh, a Power 5 program it has played twice before. The contest is slated for Sept. 1 at the Panthers’ Acrisure Stadium.

The matchup at Pitt is currently the third game on the 2029 schedule for Delaware. The Hens will host Buffalo on Sept. 15 at Delaware Stadium to begin a home-and-home series with the Bulls before traveling to Coastal Carolina on Sept.22 to wrap up a series with the Chanticleers.

Pitt went 3-9 last season with wins over Wofford and ACC-foes Louisville and Boston College. The Panthers are just a season removed from going 9-4 in 2022 with a 5-3 record and a 37-35 win over UCLA in the Sun Bowl.

Delaware and Pitt have met twice before with the Blue Hens falling to the Panthers in both 2014 and 2019. Delaware held a 14-10 fourth-quarter lead in 2019 behind touchdown passes from Nolan Henderson to both Gene Coleman II and Jourdan Townsend, but ultimately dropped a 17-14 decision.

In 2014, the Hens lost 62-0 at Pitt.

The 2029 contest will be UD’s third ACC opponent in five years after matching up with Wake Forest and Virginia in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
